ACOMA POLYCHROME OLLA circa 1920
This major olla is both a beautifully crafted and painted historic piece and also a significant piece of history. For a brief period around 1920, some Acoma and Laguna potters started using Zuni designs and adapting them to Acoma. When you hold this and study it, it's clearly an Acoma pot, but the birds and volutes are pure Zuni. We thought so much of this one that we decided it was a keeper and gave it a C catalog number. Over the years, we've found other major pieces and decided it was time to let this one go to a new home.
We think it's one of the finest pieces we've ever offered for sale. It's in the front row on page 53 of the Second Edition of our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
10-1/2" diameter x 8-1/2" high
It shows its age, but otherwise it's
in excellent, unrestored condition.
