TOHONO O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED CANTEEN circa 1880
This canteen's surface and decoration match the oldest Tohono black on red pieces we've been able to find, and we believe it's a genuinely early piece that suffered from hard use over the years. Our date is conservative. It could be years older. There are repaired chips on the rim and some repaired abrasion on one side, a respectful restoration that returns it to a more appropriate appearance. This is a piece for the connoisseur, the collector who's really interested in making connections between historic, pre-tourism O'odham pottery and later black on red pieces made for the tourist market.
8" wide x 5-1/2" deep x 6-1/4" high
Condition stabilized after restoration. Stabilized cracks, rim chip repairs and minor paint restoration.
