MABEL SUNN (1898–1980)
MARICOPA BLACK ON EFFIGY JAR circa 1960
This is Mabel at the top of her form, making a shape that Phyllis Cerna and Vesta Bread experimented with in the mid-20th century, and perhaps other Maricopa potters made these as well. This stands apart from other similar pieces in that although Mabel formed and painted this quickly, she managed to produce a masterful example. Its symmetry, form and polish are superb. Very few potters from any Pueblo in any period could have made this piece so well no matter how much time they devoted to making it. The jar on her head has been broken and repaired. Otherwise, this would be priced in the thousand-dollar range.
