KERMIT BREAD (circa 1965– )

MARICOPA SNAKE EFFIGY BOWL 2000

Kermit Bread's mother was the well-known Maricopa potter Theroline Bread, and his sister Dorothea Sun is probably the leading Maricopa potter active today. A close loopk at the signature on this matte piece reveals what appears to be a tiny scratched DS with scorpion. If that's the case, and it's not just a mangled "B," it indicates that Dorothea had a hand in its making. Our guess is that she painted it. This appears on page 109 of the Second Edition of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni and page 154 of The Desert Southwest, Four Thousand Years of Life and Art.
