HUBERT CANDELARIO (1965– )

SAN FELIPE REDWARE JAR 1989

A couple of years after he made this jar in the Santa Clara/San Ildefonso manner, Hubert Candelario started making the dazzling micaceous orange pieces that placed him in pottery royalty. But in 1989, like other hopeful San Felipe potters, he was searching for a style. To his credit, he made this large jar with traditional techniques using San Felipe's traditional fine-textured brown clay. This is nothing like what he later became famous for, but it's proof that he's always been an excellent potter. If you want a really good Pueblo matte-and-polish jar from an unexpected source, this is about as unexpected as you'll ever find. We put this on page 111 of the First Edition of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
