MARY SIMPSON (?–?)

AKIMEL O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED JAR circa 1935

This came from a collection whose owner meticulously wrote a name and tribal affiliation on every piece she owned. This has a pure Kohatk polish, and it's by a potter whose name we've never encountered except on the bottom of this pot and whom we would have assumed to be Maricopa if the owner hadn't written "Pima" on the bottom. An excellent piece by a forgotten artist. We're glad that we found her and here, at least, can give her a little recognition. We only hope that previous owner got his/her facts straight.

5-1/2" diameter x 2-7/8" high
