AKIMEL O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED jar circa 1930

This jar has all the elements characteristic of O'odham design along with the dark color and high polish that were the almost exclusive property of the Kohatk, an Akimel splinter group who moved south into Tohono territory, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, a couple of centuries ago. We've called this Akimel for those reasons, but we could be wrong. By 1930, the Maricopa had learned to polish as well as the Kohatk. This could be Maricopa, but the design elements say otherwise.

4-1/2" diameter x 4-3/4" high

Condition good after restored rim chip. Some scuffs in the slip consistent with its age, minor paint touchup
