TOHONO O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED jar circa 1900
The design on this piece makes us think of work we've seen from the MontaƱa family, whose figurines ad e-e toys, according to Bernard Fontana's 1960 Papago Indian Pottery, spanned "four or five generations." It could have been made 20 years before or 30 years after the 1900 date we put on it, but its casual craft makes us lean to the earlier side of the window.
