TOHONO O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED JAR circa 1890

This has all the characteristics of early O'odham tourist pottery. Around 1870, the glorious Mission San Xavier del Bac, south of Tucson on the Tohono Reservation, started attracting tourists, and O'odham potters were quick to take advantage. The pale red color, the less-than-dazzling polish and the casual painting all fit neatly into the 1880–1900 time period. This little jar sits proudly alongside the early pieces on page 157 of our The Desert Southwest, Four Thousand Years of Life and Art.
