MABEL SUNN (1898–1980)
MARICOPA BLACK ON RED JAR circa 1975
When we first offered this, we were hesitant to accept the identification on the bottom and thought it might have been written by a purchaser. Since then, however, we've seen pencil signatures in the same handwriting on pieces that were clearly by Mabel. In the years between the time it was probably made and the time we bought it, Mabel Sunn's work never commanded enough of a premium to warrant a false signature. One thing that made us question this is that Mabel's fired-on signatures seem a bit different, often with a cursive "S" rather than the block-printed one as here. We suspect it's simply that she wrote faster and more feely with a pencil and more slowly and carefully with a paintbrush. In any event, this is a nicely made little jar painted with a shakier hand than we'd expect from Mabel. We're guessing that she made it late in life.
