VERDA TOLEDO (1941– )

JEMEZ POLYCHROME BOWL 2000

When we saw this completely matte bowl in 2000 in Santa Fe, we felt it was the first totally fresh piece we'd seen from Jemez in years. We'd never heard of Verda Toledo, who, according to Schaaf's Southern Pueblo Pottery, only started potting in 1995. The initials made us think we were seeing a complete personality change from Vangie Tafoya. Vangie is a great potter, at the top of her game right now, but her work is totally different, high polish and incised. We haven't seen much of Verda's work since, but every so often we run across another one, done in the same vein. We feel she's deserving of more notice than she's getting. We put this on page 93 of the Second Edition of our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni next to a spectacular one of Vangie's, and it holds its own nicely. This is also on page 49 of our Pottery of the Southwest.
