TOHONO O'ODHAM BLACK ON RED CANTEEN circa 1915
This came from a collection gathered in 1916 by Senator William Duncan of Oroville, California, who died in 1936. It tells us how early-century Tohonos made a canteen. We think the wire hanger was probably added by the collector so he could hang it on the wall. Normally it would have had a more wearing-friendly thong. Its condition suggests it was collected before it was ever used. It appears on page 157 of our The Desert Southwest, Four Thousand Years of Life and Art.
