ANGEA FAMILY
TOHONO O'ODHAM FRIENDSHIP JAR
circa 2000
It's difficult to attribute an Angea family piece to a specific family member. We sold a figurine attributed to Gladys, but her signature looks nothing like this, which is the signature we've seen on most of our Angea pieces. The Friendship Jar with its circle of dancers is the piece that made the Angea family fortune, and they turned them out for years. Largely because of the Friendship Jar, fastidious critics dismiss Angea pottery as trivial and touristy, but they're wrong. It's important enough to warrant two full pages in our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni, and the spread shows a Friendship Jar that's not quite as nice as this one right in the middle of the main picture. Every collection should have one.
