STELLA SHUTIVA (1939–1997)

ACOMA CORRUGATED SEED JAR 1992

This piece showcases why Stella Shutiva was recognized as one of the most important Acoma potters during her too-brief lifetime. Her mother, the revered Acoma matriarch Jessie Garcia, reintroduced the ancient corrugated style that Stella used here. Stella branched out from the pure style, adding whimsical appliqued creatures. She taught her corrugation techniques to her daughters, Sandra Shutiva and Jackie Hisiia, who still make pots like this today. You can see it on page 35 of our Pottery of the Southwest (Shire Publications, 2012).
