ZUNI POLYCHROME OWL FIGURINE circa 1920
This is a scarce if not rare piece, remarkable becaus it's almost a foot tall. The Zunis made these back well into the 19th century, and we've had one that dated from the 1880s. However, through all those years, they almost never made one as big as this giant. Considering his size, age and rarity, his price is lower than it normally would be for a reason. When we first saw him, everything that sticks out—beak, tail, wings, ears—was broken off and either glued back or missing. He's had reconstructive surgery on ears and beak and loving cleanup on wings and tail. Now he looks like he should, and the repairs don't diminish his appearance. We put him on page 191 of the Second Edition of our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
