ROSE PACHECO (1968– )

KEWA POLYCHROME JAR 2010

Rose Pacheco is from an illustrious Kewa pottery family. Her mother, the late Paulita Pacheco, was an important potter made even more important by her relatives. Paulita's brother Robert Tenorio is world-famous, and her son, Roses's brother Andrew Pacheco, has a wide following. It would be easy enough for Rose to slide along copying her famous relatives, but this piece demonstrates that she has a lot more to offer. This delightful volleyball-sized jar takes the conventions of Santo Domingo Polychrome about three steps further. Yes, flowers and birds appear on other pieces, but they don't look like these. You can see this on page 39 of our 2012 Pottery of the Southwest and on page 99 of our 2015 Second Edition of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
