MABEL SUNN (1898–1980)
MARICOPA SNAKE EFFIGY JAR circa 1970
This is an excellent example of a design Mabel made famous, and, to some degree, a design that in turn helped make Mabel famous. It's a Mabel original, and she and her daughters Barbara Johnson and Gertrude Stevens and others made several versions of it over the years. To see another by Mabel and one by Gertrude and variations on the theme by Barbara and Vesta Bread, turn to page 107 of our Second Edition of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni. Then turn to page 109, and you'll see snakes by Phyllis Cerna, Dorothea Sun and Kermit Bread. Mabel really started something. The 1970 date was our best guess, but it could be absolutely accurate. If the S20470 code under her signature stands for signed 2/04/70, we're right on.
7-3/4" diameter including snake x 3" high
