HOPI POLYCHROME EASTER BASKET circa 1960
We love pieces that make us smile. There's nothing unusual about this basket except for the ends of the handle, where the artist has made sure we understnd the Easter theme. We have both manufacturing and distribution clearly displayed—the egg-producer, the hen, on one side and the egg-deliverer, the bunny, on the other. Like almost all Hopi tourist pottery, this is carefully made, polished and decorated with traditional Hopi designs. Traditional, that is, except for the chicken and the bunny. Fill this with shredded green cellophane and candy eggs, and you'll honor its intent.
