LORNA LOMAKEMA (1930– )

HOPI POLYCHROME JAR circa 1980

There are perhaps a hundred talented Hopi potters who function under the marketplace radar, and many of them qualify for the statement, "She comes from a good family." We'd never noticed Lorna Lomakema until we acquired this jar, but the signature told us what we later confirmed: she's the daughter of the legendary Sadie Adams, wholse daisy signature graced the bottom of hundreds of important pieces. This jar may seem unambitious, but a second look tells you that it has the features that grace the finest Hopi pottery, included a shaded firing that ranges from deep orange to pale yellow. A good piece at a great price.
