SANTA ANA POLYCHROME BOWL circa 1940
This has an old-style collection number on the bottom—a blob of white paint with an india-ink code and a spot of varnish to protect it. The code suggests that the collection acquired it in September 1983, but it had age on it when it was acquired. We put its date as 1940 because Harlow, Anderson and Lanmon's authoritative The Pottery of Santa Ana Pueblo talks about a brief Santa Ana pottery revival that occurred between 1935 and 1940. This could be quite a bit older, but Santa Ana pottery is so scarce that we have little basis for comparison. This is on page 157 of the Second Edition of our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
