MARCELLA YEPA (1964– )

JEMEZ POLYCHROME JAR 2013

When we first saw these tricolor swirl jars at a fine pottery store in Albuquerque, we felt we were really seeing something new. The first ones we saw were by Marcella's younger sister Emma, and we grabbed one immediately. The Yepa sisters are well recognized artists, appearing at Indian Market since the 1990s. We put a kindred three-color piece by sister Emma on page 49 of our Pottery of the Southwest and on page 93 of the Second Edition of our Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni and a plain swirl jar by Marcella on page 83 of the First Edition. If you really want to appreciate this piece, turn it around and enjoy the barber-pole effect.
