JONATHAN CHEE (?– )

NAVAJO RESIN-COATED TURTLE FIGURINE 2013

We found this in Santa Fe in August 2013 and were delighted to see new work carrying on the Navajo folk art tradition. The style got broad recognition once Louise Goodman began making her giant bears in the 1990s, and this little turtle has the same rugged, unpretentious appeal. We know nothing about Jonathan Chee beyond this piece, but a little Internet research told us that his work has already found its way into prestigious Santa Fe venues like the Andrea Fisher Gallery and the discerning Martha Hopkins Struever, one of a handful of recipients of the Antique Tribal Arts Dealer Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, put several of his pieces on her site. We suspect Jonathan is young and new to the art, and we'll hear much more from him as the years pass. We put this on page 123 of the Second Edition of Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni.
