NORMAN WACONDA (?– )

LAGUNA POLYCHROME JAR circa 2016

We don't see a lot of pieces by Laguna artists, and when we find a nice-looking one by a new potter, we'll grab it. We couldn't find much information about Norman, but Schaaf's Southern Pueblo Pottery lists six other Acoma and Laguna Wacondas, so we know it's a long-established pottery family. This is a good-sized, well-made jar, expertly painted. We wondered if it might be one of those too-good-to-be-true greenware pieces, but we gave it the benefit of the doubt for several reasons. It seems a bit heavy for greenware, the shape isn't a standard greenware shape, and perhaps more important, fewer and fewer greenware pieces are showing up in the market these days. So until proven otherwise, we'll state that this is a good-sized, handmade, kiln-fired piece whose decorative qualities alone make it worth a modest price.
