LAGUNA POLYCHROME PITCHER circa 1900
This is a remarkable piece: a potter's virtuoso performance. For starters, she worked in four colors, and the only disappointment about it is that she didn't find the brilliant red slip that Acoma potters were using around the time she made this. However, everything else is brilliant. Three different design motifs for neck, midbody and underbody, a footed base for a touch of elegance and the implausible openwork handle striped in two colors, something we've never seen on another piece. In its own small way, this falls into the best-of-the-best category. After staring at this for a while, we can only conclude that the potter was just plain showing off.
