JOSIE SEYMOUR (c.1985– )

LAGUNA BLACK ON WHITE LADLE 2018

We met Josie at breakfast at the Santa Fe Inn and Motel and I promptly fell in love. We talked a bit, and when I learned she was a Laguna potter, I gave her the last fully signed copy of Southwestern Pottery. The next day, she was showing at an outdoor adjunct show to Indian Market, and she gave me this as a thank-you, definitely a winning transaction from my end. I was so stunned that I had to buy her big olla, S-953, on the next day. Josie is no minor artist. She's been a potter for 20 years and was important enough to be invited to create a large piece for Burrell College, who contacted her after meeting her at New Mexico State University. Josie's mother-in-law mentor is Acoma, but she finds her clays on the mesas around Laguna.
