LUTERIA ATENCIO (c. 1910–? )
OHKAY OWINGE EFFIGY ASHTRAY circa 1940
This is a standard 1940 Ohkay tourist piece by all standards, but some pieces gain importance simply because of who made them. Luteria Atencio was one of the seven Ohkay potters who created the San Juan Revival in the 1930s, a pottery style that dominated the Pueblo's output for the rest of the century, and in all our years of collecting, we've only found one other of her pieces. Here, she went back to the old days and made a fine little piece in the polished style that San Juan did so well in the 19th century. One observer picked it up and loved the way it felt. It really is a great hand sculpture. This might seem like a minor piece, but it's by a major contributor to the art, and you'll probably never find another one by her.
